What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Pelvic floor therapy treats pain and loss of function in the pelvis. The pelvis is the site of some pretty vital daily activities like peeing, pooping, farting and sex. All the things we aren’t supposed to discuss in public yet are so incredibly important to our quality of life. Pelvic floor therapy can be especially helpful during pregnancy and following birth whether it was a vaginal or cesarean delivery.

As a pelvic floor therapist, I am trained to help you regain function by assessing what is contributing to your symptoms and creating a plan of care tailored to you with your specific goals in mind. Often I use breath work, strengthening, stretching and muscular release techniques. Some exercises will focus on the pelvic floor muscles and core muscles while others will integrate the whole body. I often spend some time helping clients to improve body mechanics in everyday tasks that they do at home or at work.

During pregnancy, pelvic floor therapy can help clients get to know their pelvic floor. This includes learning how to coordinate the muscles so that the client feels confident and in control as they approach birth. A prenatal session can include education and practice in ideal birthing positions, muscular coordination during the pushing phase and a plan of action for recovery and the fourth trimester.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

The first visit always starts with a detailed conversation that covers the client’s medical history and current symptoms.  I will ask questions about issues with urination such as leaking/incontinence, issues with pain or bulging sensations in the vagina, issues with bowels such as constipation and issues with sex such as pain or lack of sensation.  I will discuss what the client’s goals are and begin to introduce education on behavioral changes and tools to help the client meet those goals.

Following the conversation we will move to the hands on evaluation.  I will check the client’s posture, general body mechanics and breathing and core strategies.  With the client’s permission and consent I will complete an examination of the vulva to evaluate the tissue and check for tender points and assess any present scar tissue.  Following examination of the vulva, again with the client’s permission and consent I will do the internal exam.  This involves the insertion of one gloved and lubricated finger into the vagina.  This allows me to assess muscle tone and integrity of the pelvic floor muscles and gauge the client’s pelvic floor motor control and function.

Depending on the client’s particular symptoms and what I find out from the evaluation I will instruct the client in specific exercises and create the start of a home exercise program.

How much does it cost?

Office visits are $230

Do you take insurance?

I don't take insurance but I can provide you with a receipt/ superbill that you can give to your insurance for reimbursement if you have out-of-network benefits or a flexible spending account or health savings account.

How many sessions will I need?

After your initial evaluation and a conversation with you about your learning style and what you’re able to do logistically and financially I can give you a sense of the number of sessions I think will be best. Most people do 4-6 sessions, some more, some less. I definitely have clients who get what they need from one session.
